So if you're interested in fighting against the vampires of Blood and Wine, or defeating the shapeshifters from Hearts of Stone, all that content is waiting for you. There's already dozens of hours of content here, but Wild Hunt Next Gen expands the gameplay significantly by tossing in the previously released expansion packs as well. For instance, bring an arsonist to justice, and his victim may provide you with a discount at his store, but the punishment may turn the townsfolk against you. The game introduces repercussions for certain choices you make (be they political, personal, or professional). You'll also need to make decisions that could take the story in many directions. Though you can buy or find these potions, crafting them by farming ingredients from herbs (and even parts of monsters) is the key to success. For example, Geralt's special Witcher potions provide him with special abilities such as attribute bonuses or eliminating negative status effects from enemies. Regardless of how you tackle this game, you never feel like you're lost (unlike in some other huge RPG worlds).Īs in any good adventure game, Wild Hunt Next Gen is incredibly deep. You can explore freely, opt for side quests or monster-hunting contracts, or stick to the main mission(s) at hand it's entirely up to you. Also, instead of being kept on a short leash, the game enjoys an open world that welcomes nonlinearity. But be warned: Though the combat is gratifying, gorgeous, and raw, it's certainly not for the squeamish. That makes fight scenes feel more visceral, more intense and more fluid than ever before. But this does come at a cost of performance, so unless you're taking a photo of a landscape or a character, you probably want to keep it on the performance mode, which runs at a blisteringly fast and buttery smooth 60 frames a second. Players have the option to select from the visually gorgeous graphic mode, which makes the environments and character models look more realistic than ever before thanks to its ray tracing effects. The first thing you'll notice in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt Next Gen are graphics so detailed and vivid, the game looks like a computer-generated (CG) movie. This is an extraordinarily fun and attractive game that's easy to pick up, but very difficult to put down, especially with all of the new game additions. Additionally, mods from the PC community, as well as a large number of bug fixes and quality of life improvements have been added to flesh out the experience. Content from two previously released expansion packs have been added in, along with content inspired by the Netflix show. The Next Gen version packs in multiple features to improve the experience, such as a photo mode, a graphically intensive mode that takes advantage of ray tracing for sharper visuals, and a performance mode that runs at a higher frame rate. Similar to its predecessors, you can make choices that have story-altering consequences. You could also choose to spend coins on gambling, fistfights, or women of the night. Much of the gameplay involves battling monsters big and small using melee weapons and magic potions with the money you earn for defeating creatures, you can upgrade or buy weaponry and armor. Along the way, you'll sail seas, visit islands, traverse mountains, and wade through dark caverns. At the start of the lengthy single-player campaign, you learn of a child foretold in prophecy who's kidnapped right from under the Witcher's nose, so he sets out in a dark, vast world to rescue her from the clutches of an evil overlord. It's a story-driven, nonlinear, open-world game that lets gamers play as Geralt of Rivia, a powerful monster-hunter-for-hire, explorer, and savior. THE WITCHER III: WILD HUNT NEXT GEN is the most complete version of the award-winning action role-playing game (RPG) series.

The project was conceived in part because Union Pacific was having difficulty recruiting IT workers with macro assembler skills to maintain and enhance the older system, says Senior Vice President and CIO Lynden Tennison. The SOA project will cost $150 million to $200 million, and the system is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2013, at which time the company plans to phase out the IBM mainframe. Components of the new transportation control system are being deployed in stages to help Union Pacific better manage more than 90,000 railcars and 32,000 miles of track. It is being written in J2EE and runs on Linux. The emerging network, dubbed NetControl, is based on a service-oriented architecture platform that relies heavily on open-source technologies such as the Apache Web server, Hibernate query software and SpringSource's Java application management tools. But thanks to a new distributed network that has been in development since 2006, the company has been able to introduce some of that functionality and much more. The old system wouldn't have been able to handle that change, he says. That has made it tougher for developers to add features in response to customers' business requirements in what has become an increasingly "alert-driven, workflow-based world," says Martin Malley, assistant vice president of information systems at Union Pacific Railroad.įor example, because of slowing sales in the automotive industry, Union Pacific executives wanted the ability to commingle vehicles from different manufacturers on a single railcar, says Malley. According to industry experts, it was a pioneering system when first introduced, and it made the Omaha-based transportation giant one of the first companies in the world to make extensive use of online transaction processing technologies.īut while Union Pacific has been able to build on the system's 11 million lines of macro assembler code and make functional modifications to it over the years, the technology has grown obsolete, according to company executives. Each channel fully functions independently. At the heart of Union Pacific Corp.'s railroad operations is an IBM mainframe-based transportation control system that's been chugging along like a hardworking locomotive for nearly 40 years. The VP-II XC provides 12V DC power for the card readers connected to the Wiegand ports. The VP-II XC provides connection ports for an electric lock (Dry contact relay outputs), exit button, sensors for door and lock monitoring, and fire alarm input. The VP-II XC is connected to the NetControl-X application software through TCP/IP Ethernet and operates in the same way as the VP-II X Vascular Scanner for access control functions, the only difference is that the VP-II XC validates only the card ID or PIN from the Wiegand input port, instead of the user’s hand vascular pattern. The VP-II XC is a two channel Physical Access Control System (PACS) for Wiegand input devices such as a proximity or smart card reader. The VP-II X Hand Vascular Scanner also provides fully integrated TCP/IP ethernet communications among VP-II X scanners in the network as well as a server where the NetControl-X application software runs. An external card reader can be also connected to the VP-II X scanner via the Wiegand or serial interface. A card reader module for Mifare, DESFire, iClass, TWIC or proximity cards can be installed inside the VP-II X scanner. The VP-II X Hand Vascular Scanner provides an excellent accuracy and verification speed (throughput) with the lowest false rejection rates. By utilizing HVPR technology, 99.98% of the entire population is able to use the system accurately and with the verification speed of 0.4 seconds, eliminating user bottlenecks and the requirement of a separate backdoor. This results in no performance degradation in harsh environments, makes it 100% tamper-proof and eliminates privacy concerns with other biometric modalities. The vascular pattern cannot be seen by the naked eye and is not easily affected by scars or contamination of hands. VP-II X is a biometric scanner which verifies users individually unique vascular patterns extracted from the hypoderm below the surface of the skin of the back of the hand using an infra-red based sensor device (HVPR Hand Vascular Pattern Recognition technology). Food and Drug Administration, outlawed any patent medicines that had radium as an ingredient. With these two stories, and a plethora of others, the world turned its back on radium. Bright, young women attempting to make a good living became bed-ridden, in worse health than most septuagenarians, and they had not even reached the age of thirty. Soon, the women began to come down with symptoms of radium poisoning. Each lip-pointed brush stroke was “slowly irradiating” the women “from within.”. These dials were hand painted using radium laced paint by young women who, to keep the numbers crisp and precise, pointed the tips of their brushes with their lips. He had been misled, and he was not the only victim.ĭuring the peak of radium mania, the US Radium Corporation had set up factories to produce watches with glow in the dark dials. The health tonic Byers had spent years promoting and using had been his downfall. Byers’ radium poisoning was so severe that “half of his face was missing”. When he met Byers, he was dumbfounded this previously hardy and healthy man was now a shadow of his former self. An attorney, Robert Hiner Winn, went to interview Byers in 1930 on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission. After five years and over a thousand bottles of Radithor, the radium in his system had caught up with him. Our Radithor loving, celebrity endorser, Eben MacBurney Byers, was soon afflicted with a host of health problems. Stories around the world began circulating, highlighting the serious health problems of those who were ingesting radium. Like all fads, the public’s love affair with radium would not last forever. Where people today would jump at products labeled ‘organic’ or ‘gluten free,’ folks during the radium craze lunged for any product that claimed it was associated in any way with radium. One of these companies was called “Radium Brand Creamery Butter,” which didn't likely contain any of its namesake element. Radium in branding was so popular, in fact, that some companies simply named their companies after it but did not actually put any into their products. They could spend a day with the girls, lavishing in a lush spa, cucumbers covering their eyes, while they received treatments enhanced with the restorative powers of this wondrous cure-all. They could have their radium in the form of a kissable pout with lipstick. Consumers at the time were spoiled for choice. One product, the Radio-Active Pad, even claimed that it could cure blindness (yes, blindness) by wearing the pad “on the back by day and over the stomach at night”. There were radioactive toothpastes, radioactive makeup, and even entire spas dedicated to the healing power of radium. He loved Radithor so much, and spoke its praises so highly, that he consumed over a thousand bottles in only five years. It was even picked up by a celebrity sponsor of sorts, Eben MacBurney Byers. Radium water was incredibly popular and one company, Bailey Radium Laboratories, called far and wide that their product, Radithor, was the tonic to cure to all of the public’s bodily ills. Products of all kinds, touting the benefits of radium for the human body were everywhere. Soon, the entire world would be at rapt attention, hungry for any news of or product containing what some called a “miracle element” īy the early 1900s, radium was synonymous with health. It was there that they discovered the power of this element, a discovery that would earn them a Nobel Prize in Physics, but radium’s story was just beginning. The story of radium began in the laboratory of Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre, in 1898. When it came to the little they found from elsewhere, "the books reflected almost a colonialist attitude," she said, for example, labeling a melody "Filipino tune." They also found nearly no works by women, and little art music from anywhere but Europe. Looking through 12 curricula, they found no works of concert music by black composers they found only spirituals as folk music. While putting this project together, Pine's team did a statistical survey of top methods for violin, including private methods and school methods. A timeline poster of 300+ Black composers is in the works. Pine's Music by Black Composers initiative doesn't stop there - it also has produced a Coloring Book of Black Composers as well as a Living Composers Directory. Dworkin, Chicago-based teacher and performer Lucinda Ali-Landing, and concert violinist Tai Murray. (Who knew that Solomon Northup, Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Coretta Scott King and Sheila Johnson all played the violin?) It also includes profiles of three Black role models in classical music: Sphinx founder Aaron P. To that end, Violin Volume 1 contains not only biographies of each composer, but it also features articles about Black orchestras past and present and about famous African Americans who played violin. Our goal is to present a variety of Black leaders representing professions in the classical sphere, so that young people may consider the different avenues they may take in music and see someone who looks like them in that role." As much as they may love the music, they don’t see a future for themselves. "Even today, many aspiring Black students live in a community where their particular town’s orchestra may not even have a single player of color in it or leading it. "In the 15 years since we first conceptualized Music by Black Composers, we have had the opportunity to speak with many Black musicians about the importance of role models in the arts," Pine said. The book is part of the Music By Black Composers (MBC) project, an initiative developed by the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation that aims to bring greater diversity to the ranks of classical music performers, composers, and audiences by making the music of Black composers easily available to all. It is one of the pieces in Music By Black Composers, Violin Vol. The works span the years 1767 through 2014, with Black composers from the United States, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Ghana, Nigeria, Switzerland, France, and England.īELOW: Violinist Adé Williams plays "The Birthday Party Waltz," by African-American composer Horace Weston (1825–1890) with pianist Milana Pavchinskaya. Audio and video recordings are available on the Music by Black Composers website ( click here) for every work in the book. Volume 1 includes 22 works for violin by 16 Black composers, each with accompaniment, with both a second violin duet part and piano accompaniment. The book, meant for students at a Suzuki Book 1-2 playing level, is the first in a violin series expected to include eight volumes, going from from beginner to advanced concerto playing level. She also has an answer for students who wish to learn music by Black composers: Music By Black Composers, Violin Volume I, a book of sheet music. Now, after a major 15-year effort involving the talents, input and research of many experts on the subject, Pine has compiled and confirmed a list of 350 Black composers, as well as more than 900 works by those composers. "I just didn't know yet what existed," Pine said, "this was the extent of my repertoire, these four pieces on the CD." She could see that her album was helping unlock a new level of interest in violin music written by Black composers, but at the time, she did not have a lot of answers. These are the types of questions that violinist Rachel Barton Pine started receiving after recording Violin Concertos by Black Composers of the 18th & 19th Centuries back in 1997. is a parody and is to be treated as such under parody laws lmfao sup todd Story snippet In this game you take control of A.I.D.A., an android/robutt built up by an escaped scientist from a mean group of tech-hoarding crazies. However, gemination does occur across words and across morphemes when the last consonant in a given word and the first consonant in the following word are the same fricative, nasal, or plosive. For instance, 'baggage' is pronounced /ˈbæɡɪdʒ/, not [ In English phonology, consonant length is not distinctive within root words. -lagala 'medicine' (root) → ddagala 'medicine' (noun).-wanga 'nation' (root) → ggwanga 'a nation' (noun).-yinja 'stone' (root) → jjinja 'a stone' (noun) jj is usually spelt ggy.-ye 'army' (root) → ggye 'an army' (noun).Whenever morphological rules would geminate these consonants, and are prefixed with, and changes to. There are three consonants that cannot be geminated:, and. For example kkapa 'cat', jjajja 'grandfather' and nnyabo 'madam' all begin with geminate consonants. Luganda is unusual in that gemination can occur word-initially, as well as word-medially. It is the most common ḥaraka that is sometimes used in ordinary spelling to avoid ambiguity. It is written above the consonant which is to be doubled. This is called degemination.Īrabic uses a diacritic shaped like a small written Latin "w" called shadda ( شدة). The reverse of gemination is the process in which a long consonant is reduced to a short one. In spoken Finnish and in spoken Italian, long consonants are produced between words by sandhi effects.Īmong stops and fricatives, in most languages only voiceless consonants occur geminated. Some African languages, such as Setswana and Luganda, also have initial consonant length-in fact, initial consonant length is very common in Luganda and is used to indicate certain grammatical features. There are very few languages that have initial consonant length among them are Pattani Malay, Chuukese, a few Romance languages such as Sicilian and Neapolitan, and many of the High Alemannic German dialects (such as Thurgovian). Another important phenomenon is that sandhi produces long consonants to word boundaries from an archiphonemic glottal stop, for example → "take it!"ĭistinctive consonant length is usually restricted to certain consonants. Finnish consonant length is also affected by consonant gradation. In Finnish, both are phonemic, such that taka "back", takka "fireplace", taakka "burden", and so forth are different, unrelated words this distinction is traceable all the way back to Proto-Uralic. In other languages, such as Finnish, consonant length and vowel length are independent of each other. In Classical Arabic, a long vowel was lengthened even more before permanently-geminate consonants, this is no longer exhibited in varieties of colloquial Arabic or even MSA, however. That is, a short vowel within a stressed syllable almost always precedes a long consonant or a consonant cluster, whereas a long vowel must be followed by a short consonant. In some languages, e.g., Italian, Swedish, Faroese, Icelandic and Luganda, consonant length and vowel length depend on each other. Long consonants are usually around one and a half or two times as long as short consonants, depending on the language. In lengthened stops, the obstruction of the airway is prolonged, delaying release. Lengthened fricatives, nasals, laterals, approximants, and trills are simply prolonged. |
